Bible Study 1: Godliness with Contentment (Introduction)

Happy Holy Week to you all. Happy Holy Monday.

(For those who don’t know what Holy Week is, it is the week starting from Palm Sunday and leading unto Resurrection - Easter - Weekend.)

My family devotion, this morning, using the Open Heavens, was focused on 1 Timothy 6:6,

“Now godliness with contentment is great gain.” (NKJV)

I guess we have a couple of people who use the Open Heavens for devotion here, but if you don’t you're still in the number. I just wanted to open the floor for those who might want to share what they gleaned from the study, this morning – high points, low points, questions, comments, etc. Just opening the floor to edify one another.

I guess the first thing for me is, if there is godliness with contentment, then, there is also the possibility of godliness without contentment.

• What does that look like?
• What is godliness in the first place?
• What is contentment?
• Why is godliness with contentment great gain?
• How do I harness this?

The notes in the Open Heavens point us to the example of the Shunamite woman. (2 Kings 4:8-17)

• Can you see her state of contentment as Elisha asked what he could do to repay her for her hospitality and generosity?
• She gave generously and honored the man of God not because she wanted something in return. Can that describe you and me today?

Note the Shunamite woman was a well to do woman who had more that she needed, but not necessarily all that she wanted. Do you see that?
