I can tell this first hand. There sure is no separation between my mind and my physical body. What you see in my physical body goes a long way to spell the status of my mind. I have been through several weight ranges and each can be attributed to the state of my mind, not what I ate. I am an open book. I can't hide where my mind is. It is clearly visible in my countenance, makeup, and weight.
The mind regulates the whole of the body's system of systems, its organism - organization. As the mind goes, so does the body. This is known as the placebo effect, as it relates to the healing of the body. "The placebo effect is more than positive thinking — believing a treatment or procedure will work. It's about creating a stronger connection between the brain and body and how they work together." (Professor Ted Kaptchuk)
Conjuring up feelings of thankfulness right before you fall asleep will increase the chances you'll get a good night's rest. Feeling like you have a sense of purpose could actually increase the length of your life. Several studies have shown that optimistic people are less likely to get sick, because of their hopeful outlook. Researchers have found that mental imagery can help you gain muscle without lifting a finger.
People who actually lifted weights saw better results, but the research shows mental training can provide some serious changes to muscle mass.
