Questions and Answers (Twenty Five): Ecclesiastes 1:18

QUESTION:
I need you to please share some insight on Ecclesiastes 1:18. I read it this morning, but I really need to understand its context.

ANSWER:
The verse (NKJV) reads,
"For in much wisdom is much grief, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow."
I guess the challenge is, “why go for something that will give you grief and increase sorrow, right?” Another way of asking the question is, "what are the other options?" What will you get if you do not have much wisdom? What will you get if you do not increase knowledge? The answer is the same. You will get much grief and increase sorrow. So, what is the difference between the two?

The difference is one is positive, and the other is negative. One will place you on a high pedestal, while the other on a low pedestal. One will come with rewards, while the other will come with penalties. One is a matter of responsibilities. The other is a matter of punishment.

It is much the same problem with money. There is a problem with having money, just as there is with not having money. The question is, which is better. That is up to each one to choose.

However, I'll tell you the one God wants you to choose. I'll tell you the one wisdom wants you to choose. I'll tell you the one life wants you to choose. I'll tell you the one that has to do with the upward way. It is, of course, wisdom, knowledge, and money. You just need to ensure you are above each. For, just as they can bless, they can also kill you.
"There are those who seek knowledge for the sake of knowledge; that is Curiosity. There are those who seek knowledge to be known by others; that is Vanity. There are those who seek knowledge in order to serve; that is Love."Bernard of Clairvaux.
