Grow Up Not Old

This month happens to be my birth month. And, since I love talking myself happy, I just might as well write some specials as the day approaches. You know growing up is kind of ticklish. I remember years ago, as I observed the little ones growing up around, my prayers were,
“Lord, make me able to meet the responsibilities of each age I find myself. May I never be lacking, nor lose respect for not being able to stand up to my responsibilities.”
It has been decades since I made that prayer. I am glad and happy to say, He has NEVER failed me. And, I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that He will never fail. And, it is important for me to declare it even at this pivotal point in my life. Like David, I can boldly say,
“The Lord Who saved me from the foot of the lion and from the foot of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine.” [1 Samuel 17:37, NLV]
As we grow up, we must be careful to carry with us our victories. That is what gives rigidity to our faith. That is what differentiates us from the new kids on the block. Like a Yoruba proverbs puts it,
Ọmọde ko le ni awọn aṣọ ti oun yoo ni bi awọn agbalagba (Translated: Children cannot have clothes that they will have rags like the adult)
Your years should count for something. You should be getting, stronger and sharper. Your mental acumen should make up for what you might be losing in physical agility. That is the way God set life to be. Do all you can not to miss out.
The trick is growing up without growing old. (Casey Stengel)
