It was a Thursday – a Holy Thursday it was. The reality of the cross began to dawn on the disciples. Jesus had only recently ridden into Jerusalem; they were full of expectations, thinking the time of restoration of the kingdom was here. [Acts 1:6-7] Now he was talking about being betrayed and leaving. The disciples could not put it all together. [John 13 – 17]
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. (Charles Dickens)Jesus was arrested with phantom charges against him. [John 18] Just how much the disciples wished the arrest, crucifixion, dead and burial was only a dream, but it was not. “Can it be?” they must have asked. “Can this be happening? He had all the signs of the prophet” [Luke 24:19-21; John 6:68-69], they must have reasoned. “How can this be happening to Him? How can this be happening to us?”
Just how much they longed to wake from their seeming bad dream. Unknown to them, God had a much better plan. And, it was all for our greater good and benefit. They had to rein themselves in and trust God.
What about you? Can you trust Him when He is not making sense? Can you trust His heart, when you do not understand His hands, or His ways? That is the test of true faith. Do you believe?
Here is wishing you a Sober Holy Thursday. Let us reflect on Christ.
Can you see Him?
